In 2017 and 2018, Rebecca was a recipient of the DanceXchange Choreography Award, a bursary which enabled a short period of personal research and development. During this time, Rebecca collaborated with Artist Wellbeing Practitioner, Lou Platt, who introduced her to Playback Theatre. This is a practice in which audience members share stories from their own lives, and performers ‘play back’ these stories as pieces of spontaneous, improvised theatre. Rebecca and Lou worked with a number of other collaborators to create a new interpretation of the form, Dance Back.
Following informal sharings of this work in progress at Dance Insights at The Patrick Studio, and at Stanhope Wellbeing Hub, this quickly gained interest locally and the team were invited to perform at TEDx Brum at Birmingham Hippodrome and later with a larger team of dancers outdoors in Birmingham City Centre as part of Midlands Made at Birmingham International Dance Festival.
In 2019, Rebecca completed the Advanced Playback Theatre Practitioners Course. This training has enhanced her skills in physical storytelling and instant composition, and Rebecca, Lou and the team are excited to take this exploration further.
